![]() ![]() Wouldn't it be something if the high powered coil actually is causing the metal cased Craftsman light to give erroneous readings? I suppose I could try swapping the coils or try borrowing a plastic cased timing light to see if it made any difference.Īlright I've discovered the cause of my erroneous timing. I didn't expect great things from this SW dist but I would have thought it would last much longer than a few hours before first failure. I suppose I could sub the stock Delco coil too if need be. I grabbed up an old module from my way used GM hei and put in it and it fired right up. I initially got the timing close enough to run in the engine and recently attempted to fine tune it.Īs mentioned the truck hasn't been out of the shop since the engine went in so I'd say the SW dist has only a few hours run time on it. This engine I put in the truck some years ago and it's not been on the road yet. I bought the Skip White dist some years ago not for it's 60,000 volt claim but it was good looking, complete and delivered for $50. But I've only run stock coils, or high quality MSD, or Crane units. I never had problems with HEI systems with any digital lights either. And that means excess EMI noise in the whole electrical system. Any more voltage, and the power is likely dissipated as heat, EMI, RFI, etc. A stock coil (45,000 volts or whatever they put out) is plenty for a street vehicle. I don't recall ever seeing my Sun light jump around on a good ignition system.īut then again, I also don't believe in those coils that claim 60,000 volts, etc. It's best to keep a tried and true light laying around just in case. and I also use it if I ever doubt the readings on the Innova. I have an very old Sun (non-dialback) light laying around that I trust to test my sanity, TDC, timing stability, etc. I've had two Innova lights, digital readout failed on the first one, they aren't the most rugged lights. I stopped trusting them and switched to digital lights. Not sure if it corresponds to HEI or age of my light, but the dials just seem to get scratchy after a while. I had issues years ago with the older dial-back timing lights. So do i maybe have a faulty timing light or do i need one solid core wire to put on number one plug just for timing purposes? Im thinking ill try to buy one solid core wire for test purposes, way cheaper than a new light. Tdc has been checked along with correct timing tab and good damper. Irrc 1200 ohms per foot was deemed about the limit in my old motor repair manual. I tested the wires ohms and all are at the high end of acceptible. I found one guy with the very same issue on a corvette forum but he did not update his thread with a solution. My timing light is a craftsman w/dialback. They arent high dollar wires but have a lifetime warranty. I have new wires from O'Reillys and may be experiencing this very thing. Ive seen mention of some timing lights not reading some types of plug wires correctly, as in timing line appearing way off of timing tab. I love this timing light, it's worth every penny I spent on it, and then some.Ive been reading a lot of threads about plug wire selection and preferences. This is no a fancy LED read out unit, but just your basic, dial back unit of the best quality, you know the first time you look at this unit the quality of the cable leads are much nicer stuff. I can remember thinking at the time, did I really just spend $165 on timing light, but now 15 years later it was some of the best money I ever spent, this timing light is super high quality and truly a life time tool. I finally followed his advice and bought a Mac Tool TL550E dial back timing light, caught it on sell for a cash price on the truck of $165. My pro mechanic friend at the time, told me time, and time again I needed a good timing light. I spent a good 20+ years of my gearhead life using dime store auto parts store timing lights, every one of them either quit working, or were cheap POS, crappy cables, lousy lead that you had to fiddle with to get a signal.
